HOW A TREE GROWS Crown The crown of a tree is made up of the branches and twigs at the top of a tree. Growth occurs at the tips of all the twigs and branches on a tree. The new growth is added at the very tips. In this way, the crown of trees gets taller! It's very important that a tree gets taller as it grows. This is because the tree needs more and more sunlight for photosynthesis. If the tree didn't get taller, other trees would shade it. Below are photographs of two twigs.
